THE Storyteller that all Malaysians should be proud of.
Films can have a lot of meaning. A lot of intention. They may show the reality, or they may show the director’s certain expectation from the reality that they live. They may be empty for the purpose of showing pure entertainment and they may be full of moral messages up to the point of people ignoring it for their complexity. They may show propaganda, they may show lies.
In my opinion, a good film shoud both be entertaining and educating at the same time. The message must be strong yet subtle and simple, not to burden the viewer with too many complexities. And to do this requires the director to be very intelligent – a skill that not everyone has.
On educating the masses – it’s no easy job, akin to a preacher preaching to a large group of people about a certain message. Amidst all the directors in Malaysia, I am proud we have someone like Yasmin to educate Malaysians citizens, and of course bringing Malaysians films to the next level (I’m sure my friend Jimi knows best!). With many more stories to tell, I hope she doesn’t stop halfways.
I was so delighted to find these verses in Yasmin Ahmad’s blog’s past archive (from her interview with Focus Film):
FF:
You have also taken a lot of criticism for your other films i.e. Sepet and Gubra where you tread on religious, culturally and racially sensitive issues. How do you see yourself as a contemporary filmmaker in multi-racial Malaysia?
YA:
I just see myself as someone who holds up a mirror to Mankind. I’m not so socio-centric; I just want to examine the human condition and nothing pleases me more than to hear that some people from another part of the world laughed and cried when they saw my film. I don’t care about national and political borders so much, but only insofar as they create interesting differences in culture and tradition. The fact that Malaysia is multi-racial is really not such a big deal to me. The world is multi-racial. That is a great blessing from God, and I don’t understand why some people treat it like a curse.
” I don’t understand why some people treat it like a curse”.
This is the simplest message yet one of most difficult concept for an ordinary human being to comprehend.
She talks about differences in life. Differences of human being, differences of heart, differences of superficial appearence, color of skin, hair, color of eyes, etc.
Yet her message is strong and clear – ignoring all the superficial differences and just concentrate on our similarities.
Beautifully done, dear Yasmin, your films are beautifully done, indeed. But reduce all the unnecessary elements of “ciuman, pelukan, dakapan, elusan, gentelan, pautan, gomolan, belaian, pegangan, ramasan, picitan, urutan, hempukan, goyangan, dukungan, kucupan, rabaan, geleman”, will ya? The message is clear yet these unnecessary elements may disrupt the process of educating.

~ hmm every one of us has his/her own likes and dislikes involving a particular person. regarding yasmin, i respects and likes her because she makes good film. and i like her films.
pasal interview tu aku tak ingat wehhh!! s*x yang indah? seriously aku tak ingat!!! huhuhu…
when u get this hype mukhsin movie, remember my room~ hahaha

Irzan Dear,
~ it is certainly disappointing when your own people don’t support your own product, just because it’s ‘different’. and it is certainly disappointing when our own people are too proud of something that truly sucks! – eg: our national football team. it’s getting worse, and worse each year.
looking at the bright side, at least Yasmin managed to ‘harumkan’ our nation’s name to the national level. sigh.
i, for sure, like her because she makes good films. that’s all. and i’m proud of her because she makes good films. on the personal level – i can’t comment much because i don’t know her that well!
Salam…
Owh… Maka dengan itu aku rasa aku tgk episod Melodi yg lain dan dengan org lain, bkan ngan korg ari tu kot haha…
It’s ok.. You dont have to know bout the ‘intipati’ of the interview haha..

Neway.. Aku tau ni takde kena mengena ngan entry… TAPI AKU SUKA BANNER ko yg baru tu… Spooky & mysterious!! Cam jalanan idop ko yg pernuh liku2 jua itu haha…
Tp aku rasa layout lama lagi cun.. What say the others?? hehe
~ aku baruuu jer bukak mail aku last night! talk about lagging!
will make a special entry for ur song ihab! hehe… aku pon suker banner baru cam best jer. old template mcm lame la! but easy to read kan? macam less complicated sikit.
maybe i’ll change the old template but put the new banner into the old template.
elusan? hempukan? wahhahha, dahsyat BM ko yer
im not so sure which one gubra is. yang orked dah kerja and got married with AR Ramli tu ke? if it is, damn, seeing orked ngan freaking Adlim Aman Ramli gave me nighmares k? but lucky cow got to gomol2 with sharifah amani. hehhe.
you have a point. all yasmin ahmad’s products are a work of art, but there were a lot of unnecessary elements in there. adegan tok siak/bilal cool je tanya a couple of hookers “awal balik hari ni” gave an indication yang dia macam tak kesah je diorang tu hookers.
tapi ye la, i dont know why the press are so eloquent when it comes to yasmin’s movies tapi hari tu citer rempit yang agak hot takde pun orang nak kecoh-kecoh. mengapa ye?
~ aiyoo laily those are not my words lah those are faisal tehrani’s words – empukan sume tu huhu.. mmg la gempaq bm dia – dia kan menang banyak award2 dewan bahasa sume tu.
yes i absolutely agree with u – i too wonder why remp-it received far less ugly commentaries about all these. sigh.
and of course i’d have to agree with u about adlin gomol sharifah is truly a good opportunity lol!
Salam…
Yaaa UMANG AIH!!
Motif sangat!! Yg aku tergelak sakan baca tu RUPANYA BKAN VOCABS KO KE???!!
Warhhhhhhhhhh…

Tanda LAGU TU bkan AUTHORITY aku hehe…
Takpe… Simpan buat peribadi je…

Yasmin Ahmad kuarkan citer pasal CINTA KANAK2…
Haaa… Mahukah anda mengomel mengenainya?? hehe
~ salam… ayat2 tu oleh faisal tehrani – seorang yg tersohor sekali kepandaian bahasa melayu dia huhuhu… tak sama ngan aku sama sekali..
pasal lagu tu, kalau even aku share dgn a few of my close friend pun tak boleh ke.. huhu..
Thanks!!!
Aku simpan lagu tu buat kenang-kenangan hehe…
